Head Winemaker Darin Peterson's tasting notes are as follows: Vintage 2018 exudes an earthiness with notes of plum, cherry liqueur, cocoa and currants.
We select only the best wines from the best years to be bottle aged and handled as our limited-edition “vintage ports.” Intense fruit and spice, and sufficient grape tannin are characteristics that allow for bottle aging. The current offering, 2018, is an excellent example of our local terroir.
Maturation in bottle as opposed to barrel results in wines that better retain the fruit flavors from the grapes. As the 2018 Starboard Vintage bottle ages it will continue to reach delicious new levels of complexity.
2018 Starboard Vintage is made from Portuguese varieties Tinta Cao, Tinta Roriz, Alvarehlo, Souzao, Touriga Francesca and Touriga Nacional, grown in Amador and San Joaquin Counties.
Portuguese varieties planted in the foothills in California have brighter fruit flavors than their counterparts in Portugal due to the differences in climate. As a result, our Starboard port style wines resemble Portuguese Ports, but have a character all their own, distinctive to their region.
